‘What exercises are best for fat loss?'
A common question amongst those who are wanting to drop body fat.
The answer is simple. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy to execute. The truth is, it doesn’t matter what exercise you do. As long as you’re in a calorie deficit (burning more calories than you consume) you will lose weight.
The exercises you should do are the ones you enjoy the most as these are the ones your likely to be able to maintain consistently. Enjoyment helps maintain consistency and consistency is imperative for fat loss.
That being said - the type of workouts you do can greatly affect how you look, feel and progress.
Case Study:-
Case Study #1
Karen’s chosen exercise is running, she will likely:
Burn calories quickly
Improve cardiovascular fitness and health
Not increase lean muscle mass (Possibly decease)
Need to continue to run further or faster in order to apply progressive overload
Become a great runner
Case Study #2
Susie’s chosen exercise is strength training, she will likely:
Burn fewer calories per session
Increase lean muscle mass and strength
Easily apply progressive overload techniques by increasing load, reps, sets etc.
Burn more calories at rest, as her BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is increased due to more muscle mass
Create shape and definition in her physique.
Improve strength, bone health and functional movement.
Susie and Karen could follow the exact same nutritional protocols, they could even lose the same amount of weight - but after following different workouts programs - they are going to have looked very different by the end of it. Some exercises will burn more calories in a single session than others, but this doesn’t necessarily mean they’re more effective long term.
People who make money from selling you certain programs or supplements will tell you that their product will get you the best fat loss results - don’t believe it. No amount of HIIT training E-Books or fat burners will enable you to lose weight if you aren’t following the principle method (a calorie deficit)
A calorie deficit is the one and only way to achieve fat loss. Create a calorie deficit, maintain it consistently and you can jump around in your lounge room as exercise and you’ll still lose weight. (But strength training is optimal 😜)
