Throughout my years being a personal trainer, a common question I get from fat loss clients is ‘Can I still drink alcohol?’
The short answer is yes - in moderation. However this does very much hinder your ability to drop fat. Alcohol makes fat loss harder due to its high caloric content and the way it affects the body's metabolism. Alcohol contains empty calories, meaning it provides energy without any essential nutrients, which can lead to an increase in overall calorie intake without contributing to satiety or nutritional benefits.
When alcohol is consumed, the body prioritizes metabolizing it over other macronutrients as alcohol is a toxin that the liver works to eliminate quickly. Additionally, alcohol can impair judgment and lower inhibitions, leading to poor food choices and overeating. It can also disrupt sleep patterns, further hindering weight loss efforts by affecting hormones that regulate hunger and appetite. Together, these factors make it more challenging to achieve and maintain fat loss while consuming alcohol.
My opinion will always be that we should be doing what we can to make fat loss as EASY as possible for us and that means zero alcohol. Adding in alcohol to an already challenging process will not do you any favors - however - in moderation, alcohol and fat loss can co-exist if you are consistently in a calorie deficit for an extended period of time.
